Open Dmis

I'm hoping someone can help. I have been using and programming PC-DMIS for about a year and my company is thinking of buying a Wenzel, which uses Open DMIS, instead of the B&S that I want. Does anybody know anything about the machine or software? Any help would be appreciated.
  • there is a site called CMM talk that had some forums for Open Dmis. i just googled it to see if they were still around and says the site is under going maintenance. its been a few years since i have looked at that site, not sure how long it will be down? but might be worth it to check back.
  • CMMTalk is dead forever near as I can tell. I hate to say it, but the real answer is there is no OpenDMIS forum, and not enough users to support one. Support will be difficult to come by for that machine. Good luck convincing your bosses. Make sure your sales representative is involved if you want to stick with PC-DMIS.

    Open DMIS V2.8

    <begin rant>

    Open DMIS is the weakest CMM software I have ever used. Maybe I'm spoiled because I learned to program on PC-DMIS, but this software is just silly in so many ways.

    1) No sensor angle changes during measurement
    2) Doesn't maintain preferences like up/down digit counting
    3) Occasionally flips features for no reason
    4) Probe just stops working sometimes after an angle change. Need to close the software and reinitialize it
    5) Creates code out of nowhere sometimes
    6) No MMC on a slot. Say what? Really? REALLY???
    7) No MMC on a sphere
    8) Creates/adds phantom features to the feature tree almost everytime I start it

    The list goes on...

    I've been really patient with this software. The people at Xspect seem to think that part of my problems are a corrupted install. But of course they won't fix it unless I pay them. Why would I pay an SMA for software that is so weak? The MMC on a slot was the final straw. That's just assinine. I talked to some reps for the company and they confirmed that you can't put MMC on a slot, but if I updated my SMA they would pass it along to their programmers and they would add it. Really? Your going to rewrite and add to the program just for ME? What are there... 12 people that use this? Give me a break. Nobody has ever needed to put MMC on a slot? Looks like the guy up above sure did.

    Just dumb. Plain dumb.

    <end rant>

    Huh, that stuff sounds like crap. Especially the part where they think his install is corrupt and the whole SMA thing.

    You need to stick with PC-dmis. Open DMIS sounds buggy and crash prone.

    Actually, I like the part where they would add what you want to the software…just for YOU as long as SMA paid up (hah!). That’s how small customers should be treated.

    I agree 100%
  • Thanks for all the input and information. It is starting to sound quite inferior to PC-DMIS and definitely not worth the aggrevation.
  • Open DMIS is at v5.0 now on there web site. I also seen the copyright 2005 - 2011.
  • Here in Europe Wenzels CMM are sold with Metrosoft QUARTIS. I did hear that whoever are selling it in America dont want to sell it with QUARTIS B/C they are used to OpenDmis. Well I dont know....this is dumb i guess
  • I have a trial version of the latest version of opendmis as well as modus (in the uk).
    This is because pcdmis and Quindos 7 wont work with REVO or the PH20.
    If you have used pure dmis software before its fairly easy to use.
    If you have only used pcdmis then you will find it very difficult to use until you get used to it.
    Its not as user friendly or as intuative as pcdmis.
