Retract distance problem

I just had Cad++ installed and I am having problems when I probe a hole and my probe retracts past the center of the hole and hits the back of the hole which inturn retracts and hits the front of the hole and goes into a loop of back and forth hits. I went to F10 then to motion and changed my prehit and retract distance but it did not help at all. Could a setting changed when Cad++ was installed? If so how do I fix it?
  • Just before the circle> press enter for a blank line> type "Prehit" by the time you get to "h" it should be autofllling,> press the tab key once> type the value you want the prehit to be (less than the radius of the hole) > press enter for another blank line > type "Retract" and do the same.

Repeat this process after the hole. I usually copy/paste both lines and just change the value.

Best practice for general use is about 3mm or .150", but this can be different for different machines. If the value is too small the machine will not "settle down" sufficiently after moving rapidly before taking the hit, there by degrading the accuracy and repeatability.

  • If I had a .125 dia hole and used a 2mm probe should the probe retract to the center of the hole?
  • Are you using AutoCircles? If you are, prehit and retract have nothing to do with autocircles.
  • Changing the prehit/retract default in F10 may not have fixed the program you had already written, so there may still be the old pre-hit retract parameters in that program you were having trouble with.

prehit and retract have to do with any hits including hits in auto features.

why do you think this? It is incorrect.
  • I was under the assumption that the prehit and retact inside a circle were basicly " OVERRIDDEN " based on the circle size ? I usually use .1 for a prehit and retract after the DCC, coded in each program, and I have NEVER had an issue inside of holes ( Using AUTO and MEASURED features ) that were smaller than that ? I know on the really old versions of Dmis this was something that you had to control.

Newer versions of pc-dmis do this as you say, mostly, except for when they don't. The main time I need to adjust prehit and retract is for small slots, grooves, pockets, & the like.

Asking the OP to hard code prehit and retract immediate before feature that is fouling out is a fast, easy way to make sure that is not the problem before digging around in the settings registry or suspecting the installation of CAD++ went awry somehow.

Has this changed in 2012 or 2013? If I have a prehit of .25 and my hole size is .2. If I use a autocircle it will know that my prehit is to big? Will it just change the value? and if it does what does it change it too.
I have used versions up too 2011 and for prehit and retract seem to work the same as my current 4.3 version. I go for level 3 training on the 26th of this month where Ill get the chance to try the newest version, to come back to work and use my old version. Might sound silly but I might ask to use my version 4.3 when I go for training. I'm kinda glad I don't have to learn a new version every year. Still have trouble learning my version lol.
