We have a PC management program at work and its time for a new tower. Before it gets here I want to have all my ducks in a row. My question is, is there a checklist that walks us through this process? I have 2012 MR1.
Done, now PCDMIS sees the names. But not their builds. Nor the assigned angles.
Opened my old computer backup, went to WAI>PCDMIS2012 and searched for probe.dat
Copied, pasted into the new directory, both in PCDMIS2012 and the Probe File Folder I created. Made sure the search path checked there...still nothing. Just the probe names.

I just noticed that some of the probes are there?!
My problem is unique. This is the 2nd computer in 5 years. The probe files that are visible, are ones we used, calibrated, etc on the latest computer. I am trying to leave the 1st computer's data in the past so I didn't copy those probe's data over and be useless to us again. So, this is unique.
I am sure each of us finds their own way, but after poring over threads and making notes, my process went as follows:
Go to you root directory on your old computer C:/ PROGRAMFILES(X86)WAI>PCDMISxxx and search for the "settings editor".
Select backup and save that data where you will remember it, for me.. it was a jump drive.
Then copy the entire contents of your install directory...this means PCDMIS, your programs...everything. Again, somewhere you can access.
There is only 1 disk for 2012, so I installed the hasp, inserted the disk, and ran as usual. PCDMIS will launch. My computer asked to be restarted so I did.
After it came back up, I went to the WAI folder that was created when PCDMIS installed. There, I made 2 folders.
One titled "Programs" (so now its directory is C:/ PROGRAMFILES(X86)>WAI>PROGRAMS
I then opened my copied directory (FROM THE OLD COMPUTER), went to where the .prg program files were, copied all of them as well as the .cad files, then pasted them into the "Programs" folder.
Do the same with your .prb files, but put them in the other folder you made (that I named "ProbeData")
Open PCDMIS, select EDIT>SEARCH PATH.
Once open, select the path you want to set. Programs, or probe directory, navigate to each respective folder, clicking apply.
Do this for your probes and your programs.
Then, once again navigate to C:/ PROGRAMFILES(X86)>WAI>PCDMISxxxx (in your copied directory from the old computer!) and search for probe.dat...copy it.
Go to C:/ PROGRAMFILES(X86)>WAI>PCDMISxxx on your new computer, (a probe.dat file was made when you installed on your new computer) but you will copy over this one...
ALMOST THERE!
On the new computer!, navigate to C:/PROGRAMFILES(X86)>WAI>PCDMISxxx and find your settings editor. Select import, and use the button to set the search path to wherever you backed your settings up to. Click import...it takes a min..then it should say "settings restored successfully."
I know that may have been the hard way, or whatever. But it worked for me. I now just have a bunch of .prb files that have no probe.dat files associated, but I can delete those and be fine.
Mike_B, Please report back with how this goes. I need to transfer to a new company provided PC as well and it would be great to avoid the service call.
Did you have a separate disk for the machine interface files? I believe we just have the one PC-DMIS disk. I'll need to backup the My ECON (sp?) program and settings too.
If you look in the install directory for PC-Dmis there will be a readme.pdf file. The first few chapters detail how to install PC-Dmis - including all of the files you may need to copy over from an old system and where to find them.
With regards to your problem of PC-Dmis not seeing your probes correctly, make sure they are in the public documents area and
NOT in the install directory (C:/program files/wai/pc-dmis.....) Due to the way windows 7 works, you will generally have problems accessing anything outside the public area (C;/users/public....) I suspect what is happening is that windows 7 has made the folder containing your probe files read only - you will be able to see the names of your probes but PC-Dmis will not be allowed to edit the contents and therefor they will not display in the probe utilities window correctly. Additionally, even if you are able to view them through probe utilities, it is extremely unlikely that any calibration data will get permanently saved.
When I get calibrated by Hexagon yearly, the machine calibration. Where is this file? Or does it exist? Or did it copy with settings editor?
I am also curious where the machine specific calibration files are to ensure that I get them backed up and restored properly.
Unfortunately, it seems that whoever setup PC-DMIS on this computer never met a folder that they didn't decide to name WAI or HMV. There are at least 6 on this PC. It's slowing things down a bit as I try to sort out which folders contain the actual useful information and which ones do not.
