pcdmis vs: virtual dmis

I was with a group of CMM operators and inspectors last week and there seems to be some confusion on which software is newer and better. PCDMIS or VIRTUAL DMIS. Does anyone out there know for sure so the issue can be put to rest?Rolling eyes

    I have not used Virtual DMIS...these are comments copied from another forum.

    I programmed for about a yr with V/D, then switched to Pcdmis at a new company. I really like Pcdmis better, it was easier to program in my opinion. I never really liked the whole front end on virtual dmis. As far learning it, it was a breeze (pcdmis) compared to V/D...
    Again, just my opinions...and I'm sticking to em!! LOL

    I used Virtual Dmis for 3 years
    I liked it a lot
    Went to PC Dmis and found it a little difficult and at first did not like it
    I got trained by 5 individuals with years of experiance
    so it was easier to catch on
    I now prefer PC Dmis
    I went to a sister plant to run virtual
    and found I did not like it as much - anymore
    I do miss the vector delta feature of virtual
  • Didn't VD start out as Valisys?

    I'm pretty certain that it did but I have not been using it since it was Valisys. We had Valisys or Empower application engineers here for three to four weeks training us how to use it (6-7 years ago). At that time it was ran using Catia. If you didn't know Catia, it was very difficult to learn Valisys not to mention very expensive because you also had to pay for a seat of Catia. We fiddled with it for a few months before giving up on it. Back then it was just too expensive to keep running and too difficult to learn.

  • Virtual DMIS was started by a person in California. It was developed and sold through IMS. It is quite nice and seems to work very well. I have also heard the regular comments (some like it, some don't).

    Several years ago, this person from CA parted ways with IMS and developed a new product called OPenDMIS. After he productized OpenDMIS, it got picked up by XpectSolutions. They sell it under license.

    I have no idea how and whether IMS is still developing VirtualDMIS. If they do still sell it, they must be supporting it. Be advised though that the original developers are not with them anymore. This may be good or bad, I have no idea. I have never used any of those products.

  • Yep, after IMS (run by Dr. Koh, from Scotland, UK), Keith and Henrie started Xpect selling retrofits using OpenDMIS. Shortly after they picked up Wenzel. I see them as quite a solid player. A few years ago I heard they were doing quite well. Good for competition to have them around...

    Did you know they "sqautted" the original www.hexagonmetrology.com? They tried to sell it to Hexagon. Story goes that when they discovered that Hexagon was seriously going after them for sqautting (Hexagon has deep pockets to sustain legal action of course), a deal was quickly reached and the domain name went to Hexagon...

    They squatted on a whole bunch of Hexagon's brand names and had to give them all up.

    That's why both VD and openDMIS look very similar (format).
    I wonder who continues developing VD Confused
