Finding New CMM Programmers

We haven't been having great luck in finding help in many different positions. We are developing systems to train people here in house. I know its not exactly the answer you were looking for, but I feel like that is the situation we are all in mostly.

Thats an interesting question. Other than verifying their resume and work habits align with your expectations, have some practical examples they can hold in their hand explain how they are going to accomplish programming it. Better yet, once you have proven them worth of your time, hand them a sample part and sit them down in from of a computer for 15 minutes to program it (don't give them any warning beforehand) and see what they do. Either they will be able to bang out features and alignments and some dimensions, or they wont. 

In the past I had a box of scrap parts with their drawings under my desk so I could just pull one out and hand it to them, either measure with hand tools or explain how they were going to check it. 

Sadly I myself am still waiting for that unicorn job of "remote PC-DMIS programmer" so I can work full time from home. 

 Well maintained equipment and facilities, decent people to work with, supportive management,  management with appropriate technical skills,  good local company reputation,  good wages/ benefits

Steal someone from the production floor.  I learned most of my knowledge checking my parts as a machinist.  Grab someone who can measure most common GD&T dimensions on the rock.  The only other prerequisite is common computer skills.  Send them to CMM-101 or train them in house.

I went for a job interview 3 years ago and when I got there I was asked to write a small program and then we would watch it run. This was on Calypso (which I hadn't touched in 3 years) and when I got the program done (offline) we ran the program and it was 3 minutes quicker than their current program and matched their results within microns.

I don't care what your resume says you can do. I only care what you can actually do. 

98% certain that I got a machining job once because part of the interview they gave you a knowledge test, then sat down with you and sketch and asked "how would you machine this part" the first thing I said was "what is it made out of?" I guess no one else thought to ask that question, but you can't cut it unless you know what you are cutting.
