Cloud of Points

Is it possible to pull dimensions from a scanned cloud of points without having a CAD model loaded? Generate a plane, line, point etc, align to it and pull dimensions? How do select individual points?

Thanks

Scott
  • I assume since you have a CAD model loaded you are also working with CAD software. It might be easier, depending on what you're using the inspection data for, to export the points from PCDMIS into your CAD software and manipulate the data from there. If you're just trying to set up datums in PCDMIS to calculate measurements and whatnot then I would re-write your program using autofeatures or spearate the scans into lines, diameters, etc. It makes it easier to edit the program later on and to keep track of what you're doing while setting up the measurement datums. HOWEVER - if you insist on doing it your way.... Take the scan, go back into the scan to 'edit' (F9) and hit "to points" button under the generation window. **I THINK** the measured values will follow into the edit window with the individual auto vector points...I seem to remember doing this one time by accident, actually, and I would try it but I'm not at my machine right now. Let us know if that works for you!

Thanks for the reply, I meant to say without cad data, I edited my first post to reflect that, sorry

But at any rate, when I click on COP and go to edit, I don't see what anything that says "to points" The below image is what I see. I'll keep investigating.

  • You said scanned. When I construct a scan it appears in the edit window as SCN1, followed by all the parameters and stuff. Are you actually scanning, or does your machine have only touch-probing? COP's are almost always a constructed feature (from my experience), so you should already have all the individual points in your program...??? Now I'm confused.
  • Howdy Scott!

Brad here! Try auto features. That's going to be about your best bet as far as I can tell. You may have to key in the nominals though to establish some of your target values but it should work still. If it works on the CAD model, it should work the same without. You just won't have your targets set for you.

    Give that a shot.
  • Hey Brad,

Yeah, Phil from Exact was sweeping the area today and yesterday setting up newly purchased arms and he stopped in today. He answered a lot of my questions, this being one of them. I thought you had to have a model up to use autofeatures, so I never tried it. Not the case, that is how you do it. Not sure why I thought that, I did a autofeature on a drilled hole last week that wasn't on the model, I just manually put the nominals in.

After Phil's visit today, starting to feel a little more comfortable with this PC-dmis stuff, I just finished up two layouts at home that I was stuck on before, just becasue I'm not familiar enough with this software yet, but it's getting better.

Although I did stump him two questions. One being on a colormapping of a part. The model disappears when I face colormap it and I don't get a colormap. He didn't have an answer for that and took a copy of the file to forward on to an applications guy.

    Thanks
  • what is point clound is that just when it shows were all the points you've taken
