We have a Faro arm that the operator showed me has a feature that tells that the tip is in calbration. Now I know very little about this but is it possible? If you need more info to answer just let me know. I will do my best.

When I asked him what he used to run a probe/tip calibration, he told me it was already calibrated, it does it itself. I told him I was used to a sphere and he said that when it runs he has to move it in a pre determined path and once that happens it comes up calibrated. Thats probably not the whole picture but it seemed so foreign to me that I just moved on to my other duties. Looks like I will never get to 'play' with the Faro arm here.

What probe attachment does it have? The newest Romer arm has pre-calibrated probes, no calibration needed, the connector and the tip come pre-calibrated with the calibration info 'written' into the probe unit you put on the machine. If your unit (heh, heh, heh, I said UNIT) has the TP20-like attachments (like what is used in a probe rack, I think it is the TP20, magnetic bases and so forth) then once they are calibrated, they stay calibrated until you damage the tip.

If it in any way screws into the end of the arm, then no, it's not calibrated IMO when you take it off and put it back on, just like any other CMM, you un-screw, you re-calibrate.

That "cone-shaped" thingy is what is used to calibrate your probes each time that you change from one tip to another. Or if it has been a while since the last calibration.
I have done this daily at my previous position for 4 1/2 years. So, if that is the case, don't let him tell you that it is in calibration. He may be referring to the calibration logue which I previously mentioned.

I've been told we are getting a Romer 7520SI, 7525SI or 7530SI "in the next few months".
This one has the quick-change probes on it that I've been told has no calibration routine required for probe-to-laser or probe-to-probe, that the calibration data for the probe is "written" into the base of the probe and the machine reads this and uses it. Pop off tip1, pop on tip2, no calibration needed, pop off the tip, use the laser, no calibration needed. Of course, probably won't be any in-house training on it or the software, and who knows when I can go somewhere for training, "Here, use this, gimme data" kind of thing.
