Upgrade nightmare

So we attempted to upgrade to pcdmis vision 2011 on our Tesavisio DCC. After an entire day of extreme frustration, it finally installed. Problem is, the earlier version is now gone! And what's worse is that all of our existing cmm programs won't run correctly now! This is absolutely unbelievable! Without being the expert here, it appears that some data files regarding probe data have a new format now which don't work with both versions. Measured dims are not right. So, after a day of walking in circles stunned by the fact that this could even happen, we spent even more time restoring the 4.2 version (stable and runs good) from our backups.

I use a lot of high end software such as GibbsCAM and Photoshop. Updating these applications is quick and easy and always with back-compatibility of existing files. How can pcdmis be so lame, especially at the price and gouging of users with the annual contract?
  • Installing CMM softwares (especially PCDMIS) is not like installing others, where the old stuff will run with the new stuff.

For PCDMIS, all "old" programs and probe files must be copied into a seperate directory if they are needed for the "old" version (as they will be). Installing a new version updates all the probe/program files, so they usuallu become incompatible with the old version.

There are (were?) several posts here with user-developed instructions for new version installs. Try a forum search and see what turns up. It has been several years since I installed a "new" version (4.2), so some things may be the same but others will surely be different with the newer versions.
  • Join the gang. PC-DMIS is great software if you are willing to live with all the annoyances it throws at you. Upgrading is one of them. Here is my issue: due to some issues with PC-DMIS NC Server, I install V2010MR3, which then does not work. I then proceeed to erase the 2010 software from my machine, delete all WAI registry entries and then install V2009. Open it once using admin rights, erase the 2009 software from my machine, delete all WAI registry entries and then load V2010MR3 again. From then on out it works great.

Don't ask. Obviously, took forever to figure this out. But it works every time. PC-DMIS has been like this for a long time (unless you run 3.7). If and when it finally works, it is generally wonderful. Until you get the "serialization alt" issue which blows away your programs.

But just to come back to your issue, I have found that 4.3 MR1 was stable and probably most importantly: I have never had the "serialization alt" issue with that version (which was good because they broken a bunch of tool bar functionality in that version). It is rampant in V2010 and I hear it is now also found in 2011.
  • Thanks, Jan.

This is unbelievable! I use other high-end packages like GibbsCAM, Photoshop CS5, etc, and the upgrades are significant, well executed, and simple to install, even alongside previous versions. Is this the reason we pay thousands of USD a year for 'upgrades'? The new install wouldn't even properly run all of our existing programs. I lost hundreds more in just the time my employee took to install the demon, and then the arduous task of restoring 4.2 which the new install deleted! Who are these people taking our money?
