Datapage Upgrade

How easy it it to upgrade from Datapage 3.33 to Datapage + 2011 MR1?

Once the SQL sever is in place, do all CMM programs need to be changed?

Please advise,

Shawn
  • YES, each and every program you have will need to be changed. They removed the nice, easy way of getting the data from Pcdmis into Datapage, you now have to use external commands, or so it has been reported on this site.

Yep, something that has worked together, hand-in-hand, for over 15 years now won't work together in a seemless manner, you have to do more work.
  • Thanks. How hard is it to setup the SQL server and update the CMM programs?
  • Don't know, I am waiting and HOPING that they make it like it was soon, seemless instead of cobbled.

  • Hi, Matt! Glad to see you're still helping us users. I'm interested in this subject also. I'm trying to Prep for the move to Windows 7 & upgrading Pcdmis & D/Page+ but our IT Dept. says for security reasons we'll need an independent SQL Server at a cost of $40,000! Doesn't make sense to me, especially since we only have one seat of Pcdmis actually sending to D/Page at the moment. I've been touting the benefits of D/Page & D/View to the powers that be, but after reading the above comments, maybe I should be looking for a reporting alternative. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can STILL GET Windows XP, both in 32 & 64 bit, Datapage 3.x still works in the 32bit version of XP, not sure about the 64bit (I'm using XP32 and Pcdmis V3.7 & DP V3.32).

There is always the option of using Excel for your stat gathering, as long as you aren't talking about trying to keep track of hundreds or thousands of samples at one time, the PCD2EXCEL function/wizard is there, but I don't know how well it works as I've never used it.

Of course, as you can tell, this thread died after I 'suggested' that Hex fix their fix and I've not heard that it has been 'fixed' so that the simple old STATS/ON command works like it used to work. If it now requires some external command to get it to update correctly, then they need to CODE THAT into Pcdmis so that the STATS/ON does it without you having to put in more code or frog around some other way. I mean, that USED TO BE their "sweet selling point" for Datapage, "It works hand-in-hand with Pcdmis with the insertion of this single command in the program, no other operator input required, and it can be turned off with a single keystroke." But, I guess that isn't important anymore, eh?
  • Thanks for the quick response, Matt. Our CMM is 32-bit, my workstation is 64. Large CAD files were crashing my PC, hence the upgrade. D/Page/View no longer works on my PC. We will be going to Windows 7 by the end of this year so a Pcdmis upgrade is inevitable. I had been looking forward to making reports so easy to read even an engineer could understand them, you know, with pictures and arra's and everything. But, since we don't check production parts and D/Page + has problems, maybe I should recommend we dump D/Page+ ( mine's been inop over 6 months now anyhow but we still pay the Maint.fee), save my company $40,000 for the SQL Server they think they need, and accept my Employee of the Year Award! A lot can be done with Print Screen, Excel and CutePDF.
    Thanks again.

I actually do everything THROUGH Datapage, then into Excel. Yeah, sounds a little "round the bend" but it works sweet. Up to 30 parts can be reported in a single Excel file that does pictures and data and labels and everything. Of course, that Excel file is a 'work in progress', has been for 12 years (on revision 36 right now!). The latest revision included the addition of BODY AXIS direction (I/O, F/A, H/L) and yeah, it takes a bit of time to set up the Excel file for a part (about the same amount of time it takes to check 3-5 parts), but once it is set up, it takes me only about 30 seconds after the last part to be printing out a full graphical report that looks something like this: (this does NOT have the body position added)

AND, since it is an EXCEL file, once I protect it, it can be emailed to anyone and they can see what it what and where and how and all that good stuff. That same form can display ROAD MAP or TOLERANCE or SINGLE PART FROM STUDY or AVERAGES FROM STUDY or RANGES or OUT OF TOLERANCE ONLY, all by changing the value in a single cell. Let me tell you, every customer we have loves these files/reports. Clean, easy to read as well as so versatile ANYTHING from the study can be displayed on the report.

Stats/on still works. You just can't create your ODBC data source for all users. If you create an ODBC data source for all users you have a 50/50 chance that it wont work. 2012MR1 also will do a stats/on Offline that works a lot like datapageRT did as far as sending stats. The difference is that instead of xstats11.tmp it generates a xml file that gets imported. This export does not require the use of external commands like previous versions.

You'd need SQL Express which is free. Your IT department is just trying to secure some capital. Slap em around a little!
