Disk Probe

I need to measure the very top of a pointy, sharp edge in the +Z direction. Can I use a disk probe to do this? Or can you only measure around the diameter of a disk probe?

  • You must qualify the same stylus twice. You can use QualifyTool to calibrate the disc diameter & CALPLA to calibrate the bottom face.

    The reason is, the deflection for the disc probe diameter is zero in Z & deflection for the disc probe face is zero in X & Y.

    I've never done it that way, but I'm told it works.

    I'd be concerned using a planar probe (bottom of disk) to find the 'very top of a pointy, sharp edge in the +Z'.

    It is not a Quindos issue, but rather a 'metrology issue'.... if your tolerances are tight, then I would hesitate to use the bottom of a disk probe to do such. The CMM disk not recognize where on the bottom of the disk/planar probe that the point is taken, so if the bottom of the disk is not orthogonal to your Z, then introducing a cosine error.

    So if I had a disk, shaft direction Azimuth 0, Elevation -90, and took a point in the +z at the center of the disk and another toward the outer radius, I would get different readings due to cosign error?
