Education

Worked as a machinist for 18 years, then moved into quality12 years ago, where I was introduced to the wonderful world of CMM's.Making a long story short, I am now flailing away on a Browne & Sharpe Global using 2009MR1, with a LEVEL 1 class under my belt.I recently tried to register for the LEVEL 2 class, only to be told that I WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REGISTER WITHOUT THE LATEST VERSION OF SOFTWARE, which has my employer looking at other software options.Curious if anyone else has had this terrific experience when if comes to supported (or unsupported) software.
  • No SMA. The cost is prohibitive at the moment in the current economic climate.Thinking that 2009 and 2011 can't be THAT different for the class to be denied. We kind of feel like we're being held hostage, and haven't had this issue with other software packages.
  • I can't name names, but there are VERY qualified individuals who will come in house and train you on the demon, and they don't care what version you are using.

God bless Matthew. And I'm not even religious.
  • Not to mention that the LEVEL 1 class that I attended had way too much time devoted to things other than the software, like basic GDT and other mundane subjects ( not the instructors fault , he was excellent and has to teach to the lowest common denominator).
  • What types of stuff are you looking to learn? How long have you been "flailing"?

The reason I ask is because If you have been working with PC-DMIS for a while now you may not be impressed by what the offer in their #2 class. I would highlu think about looking at brining someone in that can tailor the class/training to your needs and not the benobo sitting in the seat across from you.
The Canuck comes to mind or Coconut sweater cow company (they're in MN).

Or look up BULLWINKLE he does web based stuff (with Rocky).

Thanks James.I certainly used the wrong word with "flail".But I have to have enough humility to assume I can use any type of training, or get something out of any class offered (or not offerred at this point by Hexagon).I became stuck with best fit alignments when trying to use the application with respect to a composite tolerance.I will certainly approach my employer with some of the information you have passed along to me.I appreciate the info.
  • We've been looking to spend our (free with the purchase of a new machine) training coupons on something.
Level 1 was a snooze after having only the minimum of 'training' from our current CMM operator.
Sounds like we should skip direct to level 3 or maybe GD&T.
I wouldn't bother at all except the training is already paid for.

...interesting, b&s didn't give a hoot what version software we were on for Level 1.
    I didn't find the 20xx I trained on prohibitively different than v4.0.
I didn't miss anything going back to v4 until we got around to installing 2010.
(I did miss all the crashes, once we had 2010 running *g*)
Almost sounds like a ploy to sell more software.

I would suggest either the advanced class (3rd) or the GDT class. Much can be learned about the powers of the dark side by attending the GDT class. Keep in mind it is how to use GDt within PC-DMIS, it is not a class on GDT standards or practices.

You are welcome. I would highly recommend coconut sweater cow, he is so sexy in the high heel jack boots that he has for the naughty boys.

  • Not true. You can register for a class no matter what software you are using. I even double checked with Rhonda, and she took a call from someone this morning saying that, and she told them that they could register no matter what version they were using.

It IS TRUE that we teach in the latest released version however, which I think makes sense to everyone.

We can also quote you onsite specific training for your needs, we do hundreds of these classes a month. Rhonda can help you at 248-449-9450 get the training you want.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you for checking Brian. She called a few hours ago to explain that there had been a mistake, and I was free to enroll , which I will certainly take advantage of at a later date. I may be naive, but I'm thinking that 2009MR1 is close enough that I will be able to shift gears from classroom back to place of employment.
Sadly for many of us, the cost of a SMA at the moment doesn't fit the budget.
    Again, I appreciate the effort.
