Setting Datapage+ 2103 up to connect to an Excel Spread sheet

Everytime I test my Datapage+ 2013 connection to my Excel Spreadsheet PC DMIS 2103 crashes. I am on a 64-bit Windows 7 machine with 32-bit office. I tried setting my ODBC connections inside the %system%/Syswow/ folder as well. I even went so far as to redirect the control panel settings to the %system%/SYSWOW/ folder. Still PC-DMIS crashes every time I test the connection.

    Can you clarify this?

For example, PC-DMIS has a test option in the STATS/ command. Datapage+ can send data to Excel but I am not aware of a 'test' option for this. I am assuming you mean that when you test the database connection from PC-DMIS it crashes. I am not sure how Excel fits into this.

You can test the database connection from the ODBC connector. Does it crash here? If not, this is likely correct especially if the test is positive. Not sure why you would need to modify anything under the 32bit sub system for this to work which is what I assume you mean by the %system32%/syswow folder.

More information is needed (error messages would be nice too).
  • DP+ 2013 isn't released as yet. 2012SP1 is the latest version ATM.
I agree with Rondog, we need more info.
If you indeed have DP+, there is a set method of sending data and we haven't seen the issues you describe from this method.
  • Okay could it be crashing because its not available in 2013 yet but the options are there? if so how do I install a working DP+?

RonDog -- Yes it crashes when I try to test the database in PC-DMIS. Reason I am trying to use the ODBC connector for 32-bit programs is the Microsoft office install is 32-bit. Unless its been fixed you have to setup the connector in the %system32%/SYSWOW folder. How excel fits is that's the format my users want the data to be compiled in(excel). My level of knowledge here is limited as I am the IT person trying to help our Quality department on this project. Are there any kind of training materials on the subject I can read?

Ok. I know what you are doing.

PC-DMIS is expecting to write to a pre-configured Datapage+ database. I know you can see other databases in the ODBC list but you should stick to the ones created by Datapage+. All this means is that PC-DMIS is not checking to verify the database is valid before running whatever tests they run (and therefore it crashes). The ones you are manually creating are not valid Datapage+ databases.

You are correct that you need to use the ODBC configuration options for the 32 bit sub system if you want to manually setup the connector that will be seen by a 32 bit program. I have had to do this myself on occasion.

You cannot send stats data directly from PC-DMIS to Excel even if you setup the ODBC connector properly; this is only used to send to a Datapage+ database. The database tables setup by Datapage+ look like a giant mess so if you were thinking of using some other database driver you likely find it tough as you would need to manually create all of the tables. I looked at this once and was very disappointed by what I saw.
  • Interesting that pcdmis crashes. I just ran through all my ODBC installed databases (none of which are DP+) and for each one a message about not being compatible was generated. No crash. I was using v2013RC build #515 on Win7 x64 OS.
Pcdmis does check to see if the tables required are in the database.

Yeah, I tried this a few versions ago and didn't see any kind of crash. I think there are some details missing about how this is setup.
